 Priority Standards

This quarter students will focus on the following three algorithms and  programming standards from the 2022 Illinois Computer Science Standards.  

​

  • 6-8.AP.12 Perform operations on student-created variables that possess descriptive names and represent different data types. 

  • 6-8.AP.13 Design and iteratively develop programs that combine control structures, including nested loops and compound conditionals. 

  • 6-8.AP.17 Incorporate existing code, media, and libraries into original programs and give attribution.

Students will document progress toward proficiency in their middle school portfolio. Please ask your child to share this site with you.

Self Paced Learning

Students will use Google Classroom to manage our self-pace, proficiency based learning resources. The middle school Makerspace program has been re-designed to ensure that students receive the support they need as they are empowered to explore and innovate. Using the Modern Classroom Project model, a research backed instructional model used in thousands of classrooms worldwide, students work in an environment that encourages creativity, critical thinking, self-reflection, exploration, and perseverance fostering advocacy and a true love of learning.

Unit 1

Game Elements

Students explore games to identify common game design  elements and game mechanics.

Guest Speaker: ISU Creative Technology, Game Design 

Unit 3

Game Design with  MakeCode Arcade

Students utilize MakeCode Arcade to create an original video through paired programming. MakeCode offers both block based coding and JavaScript for those ready for the next level of coding.  

Unit 2

Character Design

Student will learn to create unplugged pixel art that transfers to MakeCode characters.

Unit 4

Cardboard Arcade

 

Inspired by Caine's Arcade, students will use their design skills to build a traditional arcade game made completely of cardboard.
